Look Who's Smiling....!

This is Nina, one of our boarder/friends with her lovely equine partner, Cashmere! You've come a long way baby! Nina had not been on a horse in over 30 years, and look at her now! Thanks for coming to Twin Springs Nina,,,you and Cashie are an inspiration to all of us!

Fun Stuff....

My apologies for being away so long! We have been very busy these past 2 weeks. The 3 digit temperatures have kept us hoppin' in the early mornings to beat the heat, and back out in the evening to catch up on what we didn't get done in midday! I added another new student to my schedule, YEAH! And, exciting news, a big THANK YOU to all of you boarders/friends who have already taken advantage of our Special Offer! 4 signed up for our 'Buy 1 Get 1 FREE' Pre-Paid Lesson Plan just out this week! [You Savvy folks know how to take advantage of having your Licensed Parelli Instructor right at your fingertips!] We are busier than ever now helping our very own horse lovers to gain more and more skills in areas such as: trailer loading, transitions; walk/trot/canter, fun patterns like the Figure 8, Touch It, etc... Posted a picture of one of our horse friends!
Tango is a black Fox Trotter who belongs to Robin, this is me in the photo with him, and he has done a lovely job of teaching me how to do everything at phase 1. We practiced trailer loading because Pat Parelli says: 'As Tom Dorrance used to say, 3 things are necessary to master, trailer loading, liberty and flying lead changes.' Well, Tango did a great job!

All I have to say is...."WOW"!

If you didn't get a chance to ride your horse in our clinic last weekend with Aaron Wilson, we'll give you another opportunity! He is invited back to Twin Springs, we'll keep you posted on dates and times! We purchased the Balanced Rider device that Aaron uses to help simulate what it feels like while riding your horse with balance. I've already given one 'official' lesson on it this week. We're loving it, Aaron will be sending me his manual and video to help us.
I plan to post photos later too, so stay tuned! He also mentioned they will be meeting with the Parellis' as soon as possible to demo the device.

Here are a few of my own personal comments about how the clinic helped me:

Well, first of all, I was really impressed with how these basic balance techniques are congruent with what we learn in the upper levels of the Parelli Program. I see more and more why Pat and Linda teach us to 'keep progressing' on thru to Level 3 and 4, because the horse is soooo ready to move on. Spikey has been waiting for me to catch up for a looooong time!
This clinic simply helped me to re-focus on progressing thru the patterns, thru the levels, keeping in mind to add more Finesse to my riding program. We've done alot of Freestyle, and like Joy, I realize I haven't been asking enough from Spikey to do his part of maintaining gait; and even maintaining some flexion longer and longer WHILE maintaining gait.

I remember our Level 3 clinic with Gena that got us started in that direction of riding more with contact; adding longer and longer time to our gait while keeping them collected and as Pat shows in the new Level 4 and also the Level 4 patterns, to do more and more circles to promote more bend and flexibility in the horse. The timing seemed perfect with this clinic because Spikey was very responsive when I urged him to keep going when he wanted to slow down, he just picked it right back up, and he also had a softer, more relaxed trot than he ever has when Aaron had me adjust my seat! So, what I learned there was, do not ride so much Freestyle 'style' when you're trying to ride with Finesse! My seat was a little "floppy" and too laid back, so I moved my flexors forward, and not so much leaning forward, but more in a straight line, and Spikey went softer in his gait and maintained gait longer!

We're looking forward to inviting Aaron back. We bought his Balanced Rider box so we can start having our students practice on the ball/box then transfer it to the horse. It was quite a transformation for alot of students to apply what they learned from the apparatus onto their horses! Riders who signed up for Saturday wanted to ride Sunday, but the clinic was already full, so we may have him do a 3 day-er next time!

Spikey...My Super Horse!

You know how Pat and Linda Parelli talk about their next Super Horse? Well, I now have pegged Spikey MY Super Horse! He has been coming to the gate and looking up at the barn everytime he sees me coming out. Often I am heading out to get another horse for whatever reason; training, doctoring, etc...and he will nicker at me as I go by. The other day he heard me laughing and he whinnied! ;)
So, today I decided it was finally his turn! We have been extra busy getting ready for the Cookout last weekend, my lessons have picked up and catching up on office stuff so he has been left out.
When I got him out today, we had so much fun on the 45' line; into the creek for him to splash himself. We backed all the way to end of the line while in the aisle way of the barn. We did change of direction out in the play ground. The transitions from walk to trot turned into him offering a canter instead! WooHoo! He was so ready to give me everything I asked for and then some! I was so proud of him. And the very best part was I ended up needing to use him for 2 lessons this evening back to back. His ears were up and eyes bright; no attitude. I love Spikey! He makes our world a better place here at the barn!

What if.....?

I found this on another site called 'Heart and Desire' and loved it, thought I would share it. Cindy

"What if today you went to your horse and greeted him as preparation for putting on his halter?

And what if you put on his halter as preparation for flexing him a bit?

And what if you flexed him as preparation for backing him out of the stall or gate, as preparation for moving his hindquarters, as preparation for moving his forehand, as preparation for sending him around you to the left as the trot, as preparation for moving him up to a canter, as preparation for asking him to halt, as preparation for cantering again, as preparation for bringing him in to you, as preparation for spending a moment together to dwell, as preparation for sending him back out in the other direction at the canter, as preparation for asking him to walk, as preparation for moving the circling game across the arena, as preparation for bringing him to you, as preparation for sending him sideways, as preparation for backing him up, as preparation for sending him over a little log, as preparation for sending him back over the log, as preparation for about five minutes of 'stick to me' at the walk, trot and canter, as preparation for sending him to touch his nose on that little branch over there, as preparation for spending two minutes just standing together, as preparation for sending him to the saddle and bridle, as preparation for saddling him up, as preparation for going out for a ride.

What would that be like for your horse?..."

Aug 7-8 Wil-Cyn Balanced Rider Clinic

Aaron Wilson is an FEI Trainer, USDF Gold Medalist and "L" Judge.

His training experience includes Western, Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. He has also worked with riders who have special needs.

I rode with Aaron earlier this year with the NWADC and let me tell you, I learned a lot. He coached me through a 10yr old's first experience with contact in a manner we BOTH understood, as well as introduce my young horse to riding with a bit. I watched more advanced riders get their horses rounder, softer, lighter and more connected after riding the apparatus.

Savvy Wall of Fame

I'm so happy to report that we finally got our Savvy Wall of Fame up! Okay, actually Cheri and Sharla did it, it looks fantastic. The Savvy Wall of Fame for Twin Springs is a colorful wall inside our barn that lists all our Parelli Natural Horsemanship Graduates. We are so proud of all our students who have been having fun studying the program and have progressed thru the Levels, have been filmed for their audtion and graduated! Now, we just need to add their photos with their horses to the wall. It's great to recognize dedicated horse lovers!
